Ride The T for a Can on 7-24 and help Food Bank restock low supplies
*Economy, rising fuel prices have increased demand for Tarrant Area Food Bank

FORT WORTH (July 16, 2008) – Riding the bus in Fort Worth and Richland Hills will cost only a can or box of food on Thursday, July 24, when The T will host its annual “Ride for a Can Day” to benefit Tarrant Area Food Bank.

With this year’s Ride for a Can, passengers will still save at the pump while helping the The Food Bank, which reports that the economic downturn and rising fuel prices are rapidly depleting supplies.

One can of food may be redeemed for a one-way bus fare. Two canned goods will earn a free local “Day Pass” which can be used for unlimited local rides that day within Tarrant County.

Cans may be redeemed on any T regular route bus, express bus or trolley or at one of two T facilities: the Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC) customer service counter at Jones & 9th Street or at The T administrative offices at 1600 E. Lancaster Ave.

The Ride for a Can promotion is not valid for Mobility Impaired Services (MITS) or Trinity Railway Express (TRE) service.  However, a local “Day Pass” may be used on the TRE within Tarrant County as far as Centreport Station.

“Our food bank generally falls short during the summer period since most donations occur during the fall holidays, but this year there’s also been a record demand on our food pantry because more people are in need as a result of increased fuel and food prices,” said Bo Soderberg, executive director of Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Last year’s Ride for a Can brought in more than 5,000 food items from riders and T employees, according to T President Dick Ruddell.
“We hope a lot of people will take advantage of The T’s free rides in exchange for helping the Food Bank restock its shelves to meet the needs of those in our community who depend on it,” said Ruddell.

For more information, T riders may call 817-215-8600 or visit www.the-t.com.
